The Main Post is the heart of the Presidio of San Francisco and its landscape has historic layers dating to its founding in 1776. Under Spanish, Mexican, and American flags, the Presidio’s Main Post has been the focus of history for over two centuries. The layers of history are evident in the built environment and in archaeological resources. The Main Post also contains one of the most comprehensive collections of military architecture in the United States.
RHAA prepared a comprehensive cultural landscape report for The Presidio Trust. The report documents, analyzes, and make recommendations for the preservation of this significant historic landscape. The report includes a comprehensive narrative history and analysis through using existing documents, historic photographs, and maps. It documents the development of the Main Post over time through ten different periods. The report concludes with a set of recommendations and guidelines to assist the Presidio Trust and the National Park Service in their stewardship of this National Historic Landmark property.
