The Sister City Garden features flowering plants from San Francisco’s (18) sister cities around the world. Sister City relationships are representative of a broad-based, officially approved, long-term relationship between communities in different countries. These relationships bring people of different cultures together to celebrate their differences and create cultural, educational, informational, and trade exchanges through person-to-person “citizen diplomacy”. The Sister City Garden graciously adorns the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial waterfall with a global quilt of colors, smells, vibrant contrast, and surprising unities that remind foreign and local visitors alike of our community connections beyond the bay. Behind the waterfall excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s speeches have been engraved in San Francisco’s sister city languages.
