In 2009, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission held an international competition that addressed sea level rise and the challenges it presents to existing wetlands, infrastructure, and communities. RHAA’s submission, Bring Your Boots, received an honorable mention and continues to be reviewed favorably in publications. Rather than placing communities behind systems that sever our awareness of the Bay, Bring Your Boots presents a flexible approach which embraces changing our physical, ecological, and cultural relationships to the shoreline. Units of land are selectively planned for future inundation and elevation. As the shoreline shifts, so do the opportunities. Sustainable energy, housing, agriculture, industry, recreation, and conservation activities populate the mounds and re-integrate our society’s experience with the Bay.
