The Presidio Theater was built in 1939 as a movie house and assembly space for soldiers on the Main Post in the Presidio. During its life notable figures such as Jack Benny and Bob Hope came to the stage to entertain the troops. The historic theater has been restored as a stage theater, film house, and special event center.
RHAA designed the courtyard and garden outside the theater. This courtyard will be used as a gathering space during performances in the theater and for special events such as weddings. A new contemporary building and basement was added next to the theater to house a new greenroom and restrooms. This increased complexity to the design as sections detailing both on-grade and on-structure conditions were required. The design also included an elaborate English style flower garden that surrounds the courtyard and a large granite fountain.
