San Mateo Wastewater Treatment Plant
DESCRIPTION

RHAA was awarded this project in the 2015 San Mateo Wastewater Treatment Plant Design Competition. The project is now in the Construction Document phase after an extensive planning application process.

The design aims to integrate public access through a portion of the site and provide an educational outdoor classroom, demonstration gardens, and interpretive signage. The signage placed along the path tells of the site’s ecological history, the industrial plant process, and stormwater treatment processes. Acrylic panels screen the clarifiers and will be lit up at night, serving as an art piece and celebrating the utilitarian form. The path also serves as an important connection between the surrounding neighborhoods, school and the Bay Trail.
