RHAA worked with University staff and representatives from the Class of 1954 to develop an appropriate expansion for the important North Gate entry to the campus.  The design creates an open lawn area with granite benches for seating against a background of mature California live oaks. A strong circular form was utilized to reflect the adjacent plaza as well as other nearby landscape elements such as the reflecting pool at Memorial Glade and the historic Hearst Mining Circle.  The North Gate expansion project is located along a heavily traveled route and special attention was paid to site detailing that controlled vehicle access while allowing for efficient pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Path side lighting appropriate to the historic character of the site and a custom cast donor plaque were other thoughtful details that contribute to the success of this subtle design.
