This project involved landscaping of the new acute care facility in the Children’s Hospital as well as three building terraces. The design theme created a sustainable landscape using drought tolerant plant species from the greater San Diego region and local landscape materials. The project was made all the more challenging by the need for the terraces to be almost fully devoid of “real planting”. At the ground level, the planting palette has been chosen to provide seasonal color, textural interest and a visually pleasing experience. Pedestrian circulation was designed to traverse through a variety of site amenities which include a shade garden with outdoor seating and outdoor art, tree groves and a large recreational open lawn.
