The Central Subway Project extends the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Third Street Light Rail line. The project provides a direct north–south transit connection between the Bayview and Mission Bay areas and neighborhoods to the north, including SoMa, Union Square, and Chinatown.
RHAA worked with Kwan Henmi Architects on the design of the public open space and plaza at Chinatown Station. The design process included input from the Chinatown community and active collaboration among design, engineering, and construction teams. The station provides a valuable public space for both residents and visitors in one of the most densely populated urban areas west of Manhattan.
Design elements include internally lit terraced seating, a custom metal trellis, public art features, and sculptural seating elements.
