The Union Square Business Improvement District (BID) or “Existing BID” is
a special assessment district originally established in 1999 by a group of concerned property owners and merchants to improve the cleanliness, safety and the economic vitality of the Union Square area. Examples of beautification projects the committee is studying include, but are not limited to, a pavement to parks project for two blocks of Powell Street that converts parking spaces to pedestrian seating areas, improvements to Hallidie Plaza that incorporate terraced seating and performance areas, backstreet and alley studies to study activation of underused spaces, interim improvements for Maiden Lane and Campton Place and districtwide opportunities for hanging flower baskets, banners, way finding signage, improved lighting, and street furniture. Manuela will also help identify grant funding and other sources of revenue that may be available for such projects.
