The Hayward Water Resource Recovery Facility features a welcoming pathway that guides staff and visitors through an outdoor learning center to the new administrative building. Formerly an asphalt parking lot surrounded by gravel and utility infrastructure, the site’s new outdoor spaces provide visual respite from the utilitarian facilities, shade, and a more inviting environment. They also serve as a tangible demonstration of how to cultivate a colorful, pollinator-friendly, water-efficient landscape that is compatible with recycled water use.
The site also includes an entry plaza with a stepped seat wall and a staff break area at the rear of the building for gathering and relaxation. The landscape design is further informed by ReScape practices, a certification program that promotes sustainable landscape design and construction strategies aimed at addressing climate change.
