Japantown Peace Plaza

Peace Plaza serves as the cultural and civic heart of San Francisco’s Japantown community, functioning as an important gathering space for events, festivals, and daily neighborhood life. As the community design advisor for the Japantown Task Force, RHAA acted as a liaison between the community and public agencies, helping to ensure that the design vision reflected the values and traditions of Japantown residents.

In this role, RHAA provided expertise in Japanese design principles and worked closely with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the San Francisco Department of Public Works landscape architects. Through a collaborative process, the team helped shape a space that honors cultural heritage while supporting contemporary community use.
