Presidio Theater

The Presidio Theater was built in 1939 as a movie house for soldiers in the Presidio. Sitting vacant for decades, the design team brought new life to the historic building, opening it for dance, theatre, music, cinema, and performing arts. The Spanish Colonial theatre faces the Main Post lawn and mirrors this cultural landscape. As part of the renovation, a new contemporary building and basement that houses the greenrooms, restrooms, and concessions allows the space to cater events. A private, historically detailed courtyard for the theater was designed for visitors’ use during performances and for special events. RHAA created a colorful garden and open turf area surrounding the courtyard. A sculpture by Archie Held is a focal point in the turf. The outdoor space is designed for flexibility with a removable event tent and dance floor. The mission of the Presidio Theatre is to ensure that the magic of live performance is accessible to the entire community.
