San Mateo Estero Municipal Utility District (EMUD) Wastewater Treatment Plant Gardens, Trails and Interpretive Signage

The Clean Water Program held a design competition in 2015 where RHAA was awarded this project for our concept, The Edge. The design juxtaposes engineered wastewater infrastructure cleaning systems with the way natural systems along the bay treat water. At the convergence of the two, a strong pedestrian transect defines the edge and interpretive signage provides information on these topics. As the treatment facility receives upgrades to protect the health, environment, and quality of life for all communities served, the landscape design integrates connectivity between surrounding neighborhoods and the Bay Trail. The 2.25 acres around the Administration Building is seeking LEED Silver and displays an educational outdoor classroom, demonstration gardens, and interpretive signage. The project is nearing completion after an extensive planning and permitting process.

Interpretive Signage Project: As part of the art and education initiatives, RHAA partnered with the City to prepare a variety of signage features. Stand alone interpretive signs discuss the wastewater treatment plant process, collection system, local ecology, and history of the site. Themed signs emphasize clean, safe water. Large creative graphics on the walls of the plant reflect on the sinuous forms of the local estuaries and the importance of clean water for birds and all beings within the ecosystem. Rather than attempting to use landscaping to hide the facility, the planting layout has been designed to compliment and frame the architecture. Utilitarian forms of the piping are celebrated with acrylic panels that are backlit and glow at night to serve as an art piece. Together they tell a story about the mirrored cleaning processes of the wastewater treatment plant and nature.
