UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy is the top ranked public policy program in the country. RHAA helped the faculty and staff create a vision of a courtyard that would adhere to social justice issues of equity and enrich student minds. The Courtyard Improvement Project reflects these beliefs and creates a more accessible and recognizable front door to their program. The design transforms an unusable sloping lawn into a welcoming terraced event space. A new stairway and woven in accessible ramp revitalize the school’s entryway, creating a direct connection to the core of campus. Terraced seating courtyards provide a variety of seating options and gathering spaces for outdoor classrooms making use of the southern exposure. The new grand staircase is stone veneered to blend with the historic context of the site and neighborhood, while the courtyards provide a contemporary refresh of furnishings. The school can now be easily identified from the street with its new monument signage.
