Located in the heart of the retail district of San Francisco, Union Square serves as the jewel in the crown of the City’s urban plazas. RHAA led a team of fifteen sub-consultants in the Union Square Improvement Project. The RHAA team included architects, engineers, programming and management consultants, the SF prizewinning design team, lighting designers and cost estimators. The project included anticipating future programming of the space and providing infrastructure to support this programming including concerts, an ice rink, a holiday tree, a menorah and a variety of tented events. This $26 million dollar improvement for the square included a new central plaza, inclusion of a café, a visitor services pavilion and renovation of the existing garage. RHAA worked closely with the City of San Francisco and the Union Square Advisory Committee to carry the project through design commission approval, SF Arts Commission artist selection, schematic design, design development, construction documents and construction administration.
